Wogan's "most amazing" day on radio

Terry Wogan today reacted to the incredible amount of money raised by his 91Èȱ¬ Radio 2 Auction Of Things That Money Can't Buy for 91Èȱ¬ Children in Need by describing this as "the most amazing, the most wonderful day I've ever had on radio."

Ìý

The previous two days of auction activity had already raised £237,500, bolstered by a record-breaking bid of £75,000 for lunch with Sir Terry Wogan and Sir Roger Moore.

Ìý

However this record was short-lived, as callers competed for the opportunity to have Aled Jones and Katie Melua perform at an event of their choosing.

Ìý

The eventual winner was Martin Ainscough from Wigan, who displayed a hugely philanthropic motive in bidding £250,000 to have the two stars perform at an intimate gig at Revolution in Manchester to raise funds for the Prince's Trust.

Ìý

Katie Melua heard the news from Poland.

Ìý

She said: "It's amazing the winner of the auction has been so generous for such a worthy cause. I'm sure the money raised will make a real difference to children who really need it."

Ìý

Aled Jones was staggered by the generosity of callers.

Ìý

He said: "I was looking forward to this evening before, but now I can't wait."

Ìý

And Martin Ainscough wasn't the only philanthropist calling into help raise funds for 91Èȱ¬ Children in Need because Sir Tom Hunter bid a cool £100,000 for two VIP passes to the 2008 Formula 1 Santander British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Ìý

Last year's Radio 2 auction raised £512,450 for Children in Need but the cumulative total for 2007 is already at £649,000.

Ìý

And there are still five more exciting items up for grabs tomorrow (Thursday), including an exclusive Doctor Who experience and the opportunity to see Led Zeppelin perform at the O2 Arena in London on Monday 10 December and watch them in rehearsal the day before.

Ìý

This year's 91Èȱ¬ Children in Need Appeal is on Friday 16 November.
