Recently promoted to consultant, Rob Lake (Max Beesley) is just getting into his professional stride in a new post at University Hospital when his nemesis, dangerously incompetent obstetrician Roger Hurley (Patrick Baladi), joins the department.

Courtesy of a fake reference provided under duress by the suspended Tony Whitman (Keith Allen), Hurley receives a warm welcome from his unsuspecting colleagues.

Not wanting to speak out for fear of his own position, Rob is also feeling the pressure at home, caught up in a dysfunctional relationship with pregnant girlfriend Polly Grey (Tamzin Malleson) and thrown into emotional flux by the return of ex-girlfriend Donna Rix (Neve McIntosh).

Prone to sleepless nights and now with an increasingly persistent hand tremor, Rob can’t help but worry his worsening symptoms result from something more sinister than the stress of being a first-year consultant and expectant father.
