Courtney Love plays rare Hole and Nirvana sessions on 6 Music
|
Rarely heard 91Èȱ¬ sessions by Hole and Nirvana will be broadcast on 91Èȱ¬ 6 Music when
Courtney Love takes over the network for the day next month.
Ìý
Hole's Drown Soda - written and recorded especially for a John Peel session in 1991 -
and Nirvana's Been A Son and Something In The Way - recorded for the Radio 1 Evening
Sequence in the same year - will be included in the tracks chosen by Courtney Love
when she becomes the 6 Music Selector on Monday 11 December 2006.
Ìý
Selector is an annual 6 Music event which gives artists the opportunity to take
over for the day, choosing the music, commissioning sessions and playing rarely
heard 91Èȱ¬ sessions.
Ìý
Courtney Love joins Oasis (12 December) and Moby (14 December) who will each take over the digital airwaves for a day
next month.
Ìý
Courtney Love follows in the footsteps of some illustrious predecessors - Radiohead,
Manic Street Preachers, Franz Ferdinand and Kaiser Chiefs - who over the past four
years were given the freedom to programme 6 Music for Selector.
Ìý
In a unique opportunity for listeners, Courtney talks about her favourite music,
reveals the artists that have influenced her career, and plunders the extensive 91Èȱ¬
archives to play some classic sessions and concert recordings from the past 40
years.
Ìý
Courtney Love says: "I like to think I have good (or at least interesting) taste,
and I'm doing sort of a teaching exercise; I want people to learn things.
Ìý
"I kind of
find myself living in the past. There's a lot of Sixties stuff, some Eighties and a little
bit of Nineties. It's sort of a chronology of my life." Ìý
Love's selections include music from The Beatles, New Order, The Psychedelic Furs,
R.E.M., Elvis Presley and The Bangles, plus a documentary about the New Wave scene
in Liverpool where she lived in the early Eighties, hanging out with Julian Cope
and Echo and the Bunnymen.
Ìý
She also talks about her work with her first band, Hole,
recording sessions for the 91Èȱ¬, and meeting Kurt Cobain for the first time.
Ìý
Love released three albums with Hole - Pretty On The Inside (1991), Live Through
This (1994) and Celebrity Skin (1998), before releasing her solo album America's
Sweetheart (2004).
Ìý
She is set to release her second solo album next year.
Ìý
She has also developed a successful acting career including her acclaimed
performances in The People vs Larry Flynt and Man on the Moon.
Ìý
Her other films
include Trapped, Basquiat, 200 Cigarettes and Feeling Minnesota.
Ìý
Her latest project is the book Dirty Blonde, a collection of personal
artefacts including letters, poetry, diary entries and photographs, reflecting on
all aspects of her life - from childhood and modelling days, to life in Hole, her
marriage to Kurt Cobain, and her life and work after his death.
Ìý
6 Music's Head of Programmes, Ric Blaxill, has been delighted with Courtney Love's response
to the challenge.
Ìý
He says: "I'm delighted that Courtney Love has agreed to join Oasis and Moby for
this year's Selector. It confirms our most diverse Selector line-up yet and
promises to deliver some fascinating programmes for our listeners."
