Silent Cinema Season
Ìý
91Èȱ¬ FOUR celebrates silent cinema with a season led by silent comedy fan Paul Merton, who shares his passion and his knowledge of comic geniuses Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy and Harold Lloyd.
Ìý
In Paul Merton's Silent Clowns, the highest-quality film archive and many lost visual gags are shown in a new light as Paul deconstructs the comedians' art.
Ìý
In Silent Britain Matthew Sweet, author of the acclaimed Shepperton Babylon, which claimed that early British cinema rivalled Hollywood, explores the roots of the industry.
Ìý
On his journey he meets archivists, screenwriters, a silent film pianist and a veteran cinematographer to give an overview of how innovative and glorious the often forgotten early British silent films were.
Ìý
Holmfirth – The Original Hollywood (working title) focusses on one West Yorkshire family that became major players in the film-making business long before Hollywood dominated the scene.
Ìý
The pioneering days of James Bamforth, an enterprising painter and decorator in the late 1800s, are explored by his descendents.
Ìý
Holmfirth, better known today as the set for the 91Èȱ¬'s Last Of The Summer Wine, could have become the centre of Britain's film industry had fate been kinder to the Bamforth dynasty.
Ìý
A new and poignant drama by Neil Brand, Stan, explores the last farewell between comedy legends Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.
Ìý
It's 1957 and Stan receives a call he has been dreading. His comedy partner Oliver is dying after a massive stroke, which took away his speech and almost all his movement, and now he has been summoned to say goodbye. Ìý
