Absolute Power - Spin is Dead, Long
Live PR
Prentiss and McCabe – The Team
Charles Prentiss - Stephen Fry
Ìý
A Machiavellian chancer who believes there is no such thing as the truth
- the facts exist to be manipulated.
Ìý
Flamboyant and witty, he relishes his role as a behind-the-scenes puppet
master. His approach to the job is compellingly detached. He regards his
clients, however famous, as widgets who in common with any high street
brand are often in need of a little repackaging.
Ìý
When confronted with the minor ethical problem of representing two clients
going for the same job, Charles embraces the estate agent analogy with
typical bravura: "Not only can you represent the buyer and the seller
but you can steal all the light bulbs, p**s in the sink and go and live
in the house after they've bought it."
Ìý
Charles' view of the world: "In the land of fatuous defrauders,
the biggest two-faced lying git is king."
Ìý
About his team: "This is Alison. We're obliged by law to employ
a certain number of people like her."
Ìý
About himself: "Charles Prentiss, and I talk from bitter personal
experience, is one of the most despicable, unscrupulous and downright
dishonest people it's ever been my displeasure to meet."
Ìý
Martin McCabe - John Bird
Ìý
Less comfortable in the spotlight than Charles, Martin is from the old
school of PR.
Ìý
Happy to hook up with someone prepared to take the company to new heights,
he sees Charles as brilliant.
Ìý
However, when it comes to dealing with ethically contentious campaigns,
Martin has a different view as to where the moral line should be drawn.
He watches with benign cynicism as Charles walks the high wire.
Ìý
Martin's favourite mantra is: "Another bottle of Crozes Hermitage please."
Ìý
Alison Jackman - Zoe Telford
Ìý
Having more determination than talent, Alison paddles hard to keep up
with the effortless deviousness of the people she works with. She brings
attention to detailed research to her work at Prentiss McCabe.
Ìý
Alison never does things by halves. As Charles memorably says of her:
"Most of the young people here at Prentiss McCabe don't know their arse
from their elbow, but with Alison you know she'll join the Royal Arse
Society and get a book about elbows from the library."
Ìý
Alison's favourite mantra is: "I was thinking of getting to grips with
Hugh Grant."
Ìý
Jamie Front – James
Lance
Ìý
Effortlessly good at his job – i.e. a good liar - Jamie has charm and
is able to adjust his style and tone to persuade a wide range of clients
that what he is doing for them is in their best interests. Jamie is a
creative thinker.
Ìý
His favourite mantra is: "I'm waiting for LA to open."
Ìý
Nick Mayer - Nick Burns
Ìý
The ambitious personal assistant to Charles and Martin has been promoted
to the creative team. Sly, urbane - he can be all things to all people.
On hearing the news that Charles might face a long prison sentence, Nick's
reaction is, "The king is dying. Long live the successful early applicant."
Ìý
Nick's favourite mantra is: "Is the world slowly coming round to
our way of thinking, or are we inadvertently shaping the world?"
Ìý
Cat Durnford - Sally Bretton
Ìý
The youngest member of the creative team - and she's learning fast.
A party girl by night, she still manages to hold her own with her more
experienced colleagues.
Ìý
Cat's favourite mantra is: "Who can I flirt with today?"
