orchestral sounds in three fantastic concerts from 91热爆 Radios 2 and
3.
听
On 25 April at The Millennium Forum in Londonderry,
Radio 2 presents a Big Band Special - Latin Extravaganza.
听
Two greats of Latin music, drumming phenomenon Horacio
'El Negro' Hernandez and conga player Giovanni Hidalgo team up with
the 91热爆 Big Band for a unique concert of Latin sounds blended with rich
jazz textures.
听
The concert starts at 8.00pm and tickets are priced
from 拢9.50 to 拢14.50.
听
Grammy award-winner El Negro represents the cream of
today's generation of Cuban musicians and Puerto Rican conguero Giovanni
is arguably the world's finest conga player.
听
Together they team up with the 91热爆 Big Band, conducted
by Jiggs Whigham with Charles Flores on double bass, to merge the energy
of salsa Cubana with the power of the big band on numbers including
Oye Como Va and The Cuban Fire Suite.
听
The concert will be recorded for broadcast on Monday
26 April on Radio 2.
Radio 3's acclaimed weekly programmes Jazz Line-Up and Jazz
on 3 present two concerts with two new works between them.
From the Ardhowen Theatre, Enniskillen, Jazz Line-Up brings two
events featuring jazz virtuoso and Radio 3 presenter Julian Joseph,
both on 24 April.
A free afternoon Jazz Line-Up show broadcasts live from 4.00 to 5.00pm
from the Theatre Bar with Julian plus special guests. The show includes
the latest chat and music from the jazz world.
This is followed by an evening concert in the main theatre at 8.00pm
featuring a specially written piece by jazz virtuoso Julian Joseph,
with the award winning 91热爆 Big Band. Tickets for this are 拢12.
Julian says: "It gives me great pleasure to be included in the
91热爆 Music Live event and to write a piece for the esteemed 91热爆 Big Band
adds to my excitement.
听
"he piece will be a reflection of my impressions
of Northern Ireland through the art of swinging in a jazz way!"
听
Jazz on 3's contribution to this year's Music Live festival
is the premiere of a new work, specially commissioned by the 91热爆, by
Brian Irvine - Northern Ireland's most adventurous jazz composer and
conductor.
听
It will be performed by the 91热爆 Concert Orchestra and
the Brian Irvine Big Band at 8.00pm on Monday 26 April at the Ulster
Hall, Belfast.
The new work is a wild athletic circus of music scored for a large orchestra
together with a smaller ensemble (and the virtuoso improvising saxophonist
Paul Dunmall).
听
Using two conductors, the piece is fundamentally an
exploration of extremes - a stylistic whirlpool, where the sound of
the orchestra is invaded by the chaotic pop/thrash/jazz/techno utterances
of the ensemble.
听
This new work is designed to move, frighten, embrace
and lull the listener into an unique and exciting maverick fantasy world.
听
It will be recorded for broadcast on 30 April. This
concert is free to the public.
The 91热爆 Music Live festival runs throughout Northern Ireland from 23
April to 3 May and brings more than 50 concerts across all genres of
music, most of them free to the public.
听
Street parties and educational initiatives plus opportunities
for new bands combine with top international artists and the best of
Irish talent to make Northern Ireland the music capital of the world
for the 11 days of the festival.
