Danny Dyer plays Yankie
Danny
Dyer has been called England's answer to Colin Farrell, a compliment
that leaves him bemused if not a little proud.
"He's
a great looking bloke and by all accounts a really nice guy... yeah
I'd love to have a pint with him. And if people want to liken him
to me, then that is a great compliment, because I think he's a brilliant
actor."
Danny's
career has been building in 2003 and looks set to take off this
year when his film Football Factory comes out in the Spring.
"I
play an up-and-coming football thug that keeps having weird premonitions
and dreams about getting beaten up really badly. The backdrop is
football hooliganism, but it's not just that.
"It
explores what I'm going through and the fact that my pals think
that I love being brutal but the reality is that I don't and I'm
totally paranoid," he says.
Danny
plays Yankie in Family Business, a real geezer with a heart of gold
who works for Brooker & Son.
"Yankie
is a real West Ham boy and a bit of light relief. The series is
quite serious, so when Yankie and Jethro get going it's a bit of
a laugh," he says.
For
Yankie there is unexpected romance with Marky's sister Rachel, played
by Claire Rushbrook.
"Yankee
and Rachel are packed off to France to buy a load of booze for a
party and on the way back they get a bit jiggy in the back of a
Transit!," he laughs.
"It's
a 20 second thing you know. All good innocent fun," he adds.
Danny
believes in fate and is quite philosophical when it comes to his
lucky break, which came at the tender age of 14.
"I
used to go to Sunday school and did a spot of improvising,"
he says.
"I
got picked out by an agent, and he wanted me on his books. He said
that he had an audition lined up for Prime Suspect and did I want
to do it? I got the job.
"I'm
not being rude or flash but I don't think people like us need drama
school. The bottom line is that acting is making it real and making
people believe you. That's the key - and a good director of course."
Danny
is a great believer in family life and after a split with his girlfriend
he's decided to make a go of it again with her and their seven-year-old
daughter.
"Family
is everything - mum and dad, sisters and brothers, we are East End
people you know. Of course you stick with your own, you know what
I mean?
"I've
calmed down now and have a kid so I really want to make it work
this time. I know I'm young but family is the most important thing
in the world and I have responsibilities now."
