Local lads aboard HMS Nottingham
HMS Nottingham is proud of its association with the City of Nottingham. We now meet some of the local lads that both sail on and come from Nottingham.

Adam Mulligan
Adam Mulligan, MEM
Adam Mulligan

Age: 24

Born and raised: Carlton, Nottingham

Occupation: Marine Engineer Mechanic

Service: Joined the navy at the age of nineteen. Spent two years serving on HMS Illustrious, an aircraft carrier. In this time he travelled to such countries as Australia, Singapore, Philippines and India to name a few. He then spent nine months at the land base HMS Excellent. He joined HMS Nottingham in May and in scheduled to stay onboard two years. However, he plans to apply for an extension.

Previous Occupation: On leaving school he spent eighteen months working in Hillarys Blinds in Netherfield as well as six months on YTS before joining up.

Pastimes: He plays for the Stokers, the mechanics football team and also plans to go on a four week divers' course to add to his skills.

Best thing about the Navy: "You've always got someone to go out drinking with."

Danny Zanelli

Age: 19

Born and raised: Worksop, Nottinghamshire

Occupation: Captain's Personal Steward

Service: After two months in the navy Danny found himself on HMS Gloucester heading for Dubai. He has been a steward for the last sixteen months and joined HMS Nottingham in June as the Captain's personal steward.

Previous Occupation: Danny spent his time prior to joining the navy working in a factory and also working as a plasterer. His father encouraged him to enter the navy, like his half-brother had done, to keep him on the straight and narrow.

Pastimes: He sees the navy as a good vehicle for picking up skills that can be used in later life such as firefighting and diving.

Best thing about the Navy: "The money!"

Danny might be considered to have the sea in his blood. His half-brother John Ells (second from right in the picture above), from Sheffield, also serves in the navy. It was here that he met his wife, Kirsty Ells (far right), whilst serving on HMS Endurance on their way to the South Pole.
