The competition was organised by Business East Midlands Magazine in
order to raise the profile of the region and create a greater sense
of regional identity.
The ideas competition, open to anyone with a connection to the region,
attracted some 200 entries. These were whittled down to a shortlist
of nine by a panel of judges.
The final winner was chosen by the people of the East Midlands, who
voted for their favourite scheme via the internet.
The winning
scheme, Sky Vault, designed by Nottingham-based design team 2hD
(Alina Hughes, Tom Hughes and Thibaut Devulder), was announced by
Sir Richard Attenborough at a ceremony at Leicester University on
12th November 2001.
"The
landmark must let people know where they are, but it has the
potential to do far more than that." |
Tom Hughes,
Sky Vault Designer |
Tom Hughes, part
of the Sky Vault design team, believes in the importance of the project:
"The East Midlands needs a landmark that is both inspiring and
hardworking."
"The landmark must let people know where they are, but it has
the potential to do far more than that: It can help the region to
project a positive identity and give the people of the region a sense
of pride and belonging."
The Sky Vault design is now being developed by 2hD with the collaboration
of a team of engineers, manufacturers and contractors, many of whom
have links to the East Midlands region.
The designers
hope to get useful feedback from the public on their model by touring
the regions supermarkets, and are keen on hearing suggestions on where
to put it.
The M1 close to East Midlands Airport has been one of the most popular
locations so far. Don鈥檛 forget to have
your say on where you think the landmark should be placed.
