Sir Jesse Boot
1850 - Born in Nottingham. His father was John Boot, a farm labourer, and his mother was Mary Wells. The family lived in Hockley, which at the time was an overcrowded, poor area of 19th Century Nottingham.
1860 - Jesse鈥檚 father dies. His mother continues to run the family shop with help from family and friends. The shop sells herbal remedies.
1863 - Jesse leaves school at 13 and works in the his family's shops.
1871 - Jesse becomes a partner in the 'Mary and Jesse Boot Herbalists'.
1877 - The shop changes its name to 'M & J Boot', and again in 1883 to 'Boot and Company Limited'
1884 - Jesse opens his first shop outside Nottingham, in Sheffield.
1889 - Jesse meets Florence Rowe. They marry and have their first child, John.
1892 - The manufacturing side of Boots movesto factories on Island Street. This site rapidly grew and soon was known as the Island Street works.
1900 - Boots appear all over the country.
1909 - Jesse Boot is knighted for his work.
1913 - Jesse had around 560 shops operating around the country.
1920 - Boots is sold to an American man for 拢2录 million. Sir Jesse is given the Freedom of Nottingham City.
1931 - Jesse dies.
1933 - The Boots factories move from Island Street to a new factory at Beeston. In the same year the 1,000th Boots store is opened in Galashiels, Scotland.
