Title - favourite days out

Bracing delights of the North Norfolk coast
by Tony Mallion

Beach huts at Wells
The sweep of beach at Wells-next-the-Sea- and those jolly beach huts.

This may seem somewhat disloyal from someone who lives by the sea at Gorleston but my favourite part of the county has to be North Norfolk.

Wonderful though Gorleston beach may be with its golden beach and the Blue Flag flying, what I really enjoy is the view you get of the saltmarshes at either Blakeney or Wells-next-the-Sea.

Both offer that wonderful vista, framed by the buildings of the High Street in the case of the former, and Staithe Street in the latter.

You can stand high looking down towards your destination. The marshes and the wide, open sky stretch out and beckon.

And in the case of Wells there's the prospect of that bracing walk along the sea wall until you reach the Lifeboat Shed and those oh-so-jolly beach huts.

Keep going and you have smooth, wide Holkham Beach stretching on to infinity. Even on the wildest winter's day when the sand is whipped up like a snow storm there's the alternative walk back through the richly-scented pine woods.

Where else could you find a sheltering forest right next to the beach? Perfect!
