Surface Tensions explores the achievements and
legacy of Abstract Expressionism - one of the most important and
influential art movements of the twentieth century.
Abstract Expressionism emerged in America in the
decades following the Second World War.
Surface Tensions will feature paintings by many of the leading artists
associated with the movement including Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock,
Mark Rothko, Philip Guston and Mark Tobey.
The exhibition will also showcase British artists'
response to the achievements of the American painters through the
inclusion of major paintings by Gillian Ayres, Alan Davie, Richard
Smith and other leading British artists of the twentieth century.

Works by contemporary artists such as James Hugonin
and Shirazeh Houshiary show how Abstract Expressionism continues
to influence art today.
Paintings in the exhibition will be displayed so as to focus on
two different approaches in Abstract Expressionism.
In one of the Castle's state-of-the-art galleries, visitors will
be able enjoy the vibrancy and energy of 'action painting'.
In the other, futons will provided for people to settle in and enjoy
the more meditative and contemplative works of the 'colour-field
artists'.
Surface Tensions is supported by a range of events,
talks and activities. And children will enjoy exploring the paintings
for themselves with the help of specially devised 'lucky dip' cards
and 'travelling labels'.
