Some people in Cheshire were evacuated from the flooding

Rescue workers in the north of England have been working through the night to help people affected by the severe weather, after heavy rain, hail and flooding have caused lots of problems.

Firefighters needed to rescue people in areas of Cheshire and helped to put flood protection in many other locations.

A children's centre opened up for those affected to go to rest and keep dry.

Many cars remain trapped in flooded areas, while trains have also been affected by the bad weather, with many services delayed or cancelled.

Flooding in Yorkshire has caused roads to close and bridges to collapse.

This is because around 50mm of rain fell in about an hour.

Such a large amount of rain falling in a short space of time caused some streams and rivers to burst their banks, resulting in flash flooding.

The Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team - which operates across the Yorkshire Dales National Park - has warned people to "only travel if essential as many routes impassable" due to the flooding.

The Met Office, which monitors the weather in the UK, has put out a yellow weather warning for the North of England and Scotland.

Much of Scotland is expected to be hit by thunderstorms and there is also a chance of flooding.
