On Monday 24th September, the Best Fifa Awards took place in London, where the world's top footballers were nominated for prestigious awards.

It was Real Madrid's Luka Modric that was crowned 'best male', beating ex team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool's Mohammed Salah to the award.

It's the first time a player other than Ronaldo or Barca's Lionel Messi has won any of world football's best individual player awards since 2007.

Modric earned his third Champions League title earlier this year. The Croatia midfielder also helped guide his nation to their first World Cup final this summer.

"This award is not just mine. It is my team-mates from Real Madrid and Croatia. Without my coaches, I would not have won this and without my family I would not be the player I am today," said Modric.

Brazil's Marta won the best female player award. The striker led Brazil to the Copa America Femenina title in April, as they won all seven matches - and reached the play-off semi finals for Orlando Pride in the USA.

It's the sixth time she has won best female player.

Asked how she felt at receiving the award, she said: "This means so much, but it is not only about Marta, it is about my team-mates and women's football."

"Most importantly, it is good to see women's soccer grow each year. If I keep doing well and that can help off the field too, then I am happy."

France's Didier Deschamps, whose side were victorious at this summer's World Cup in Russia, was voted best men's coach.

Other winners:

Puskas award for Best Goal - Mohammed Salah, for his stunning curling effort versus Everton in his first Merseyside derby.

Best Women's coach - Reynald Pedros. He steered Lyon to their first league and Champions League win in his first season at the club.

Best Goalkeeper - Thibaut Courtois. After his transfer from Chelsea to Real Madrid this summer, the Belgian beat Leicester City and Denmark's Kasper Schmeichel, and Tottenham's World Cup-winning goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

The 'Best' award is like the Ballon D'or, but unlike the golden trophy this one is decided by a vote.

25% of the vote is by the public, with national team captains, coaches and representatives of the world's media making up the other 75%.
