The British Antarctic Survey's new research station, Halley VI, becomes fully operational this month. Documentary-maker, Kirk Watson, who's based in Scotland, photographed the station being built.

The new station replaces the 20-year-old Halley V and is the sixth to be built on Antarctica's Brunt Ice Shelf.

The station cost 拢25.8 million to build and has been designed to stand up to extreme winter weather. It has a gym, research labs and a doctor's surgery - it has even got a pool table.

It will be the new home for scientists researching the Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field.
