Jersey has had twice the usual amount of rain for December, according to weather figures.

Jersey's Meteorological Department said there has been 8.5ins (220mm) of rain.

Peter Munns, of the department, said this including a quarter of an inch of rain overnight on Tuesday.

Despite this Howard Snowden, of Jersey Water, said reservoirs were still emptier than normal, at 60% full and islanders must continue to save water.

Meanwhile, the desalination plant is being switched off after over a month of producing drinking water from the sea, costing nearly £200,000.

Mr Snowden said the cost of using the plant would not be passed onto islanders.
