Inflation levels in Jersey are at their highest for three years, according to the States' statistics unit.

In the year to September 2011, the retail price index, which measures the cost of goods and services in the island, rose by 5.4%.

Food prices went up by an average of 8%, with a significant rise in the cost of some breakfast cereals.

Officials recorded increases of more than 20% for some cereals, and a 15% increase for butter, fruit and oils.

States statistician Duncan Gibault said: "In contrast, fresh vegetables, eggs and some fresh meats saw slightly lower average prices on an annual basis."
