Islanders delay getting flu jab because of warm weather

  • Published

Jersey health officials are concerned people are not getting the flu jab because of the unusually warm weather.

Jersey's Met Office said Saturday was officially the hottest October day on record in the island.

The health department is reminding islanders to have the seasonal flu vaccination.

Dr Ivan Muscat, a consultant microbiologist, said he was concerned the warm weather meant people were delaying a visit to their GP.

He said: "People at risk as a result of underlying disease, or those over the age of 65 and pregnant women are at increased risk from complications if they catch flu.

"They are the people that we particularly urge to make an appointment to be vaccinated."

On Saturday the temperature reached 26.9C - 2.5C higher than the previous record of 24.4C which was set in October 1959.
