Water bills could be reduced if more people living in Jersey switched to a meter system, the island's water company has said.

Jersey Water announced earlier this week that non-metered tariffs would rise by 1.5% from April.

In a bid to encourage more people to transfer to meters, the company has frozen prices for a second year.

Managing Director Howard Snowden would like to see 90% of homes with a meter within the next four years.

Where meters are possible, the company will install one free of charge.

The take-up rate for water meters in Jersey is currently about 50%.

Jersey Water said metering was also a key factor in helping to encourage water efficiency, identify leakage and reduce waste, with customers in control of their own consumption and bills.
