The 拢37m project to build a new Guernsey school and sports centre has begun.

A new building to house Les Beaucamps High School is due to be built before the current block is demolished and replaced by a sports centre.

Education Minister Carol Steere broke the soil and said: "It's no longer a plan it's a reality.

"After all the years of planning and promises from the States we're finally at this moment."

The redevelopment of the site has been discussed since 2001 when it was decided to update all the island's schools.

Built in the 1950s, Les Beaucamps is the oldest of the three secondary schools built in the island after World War II and has about 500 students.
