Dyfed-Powys Police's director of legal services has been suspended over payments made to a firm of barristers where her husband worked.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission said Samantha Gainard had signed off invoices for legal services "over a number of years".
The police watchdog is looking into her role in instructing the company.
It is also investigating whether she declared a potential conflict of interest.
