AFC Telford are investigating allegations football fans chanted about the death of the former Wales manager Gary Speed during the team's game at Wrexham on Sunday.

The inquiry follows a complaint from a Wrexham supporter and has caused upset among other fans who heard the remarks.

Telford bosses said they will ban individuals responsible for any "indecent chanting" from their stadium.

Speed was found dead at his home in November.

On Wednesday, the Football Association of Wales announced a Speed memorial international friendly game against Costa Rica in Cardiff on 29 February.

In a statement on the AFC Telford United , the club said it had been made aware of an incident that took place at the Racecourse stadium clash on New Year's Day which Wrexham won 4-0.

"The club are making further enquiries with a view to banning any individual identified as being responsible for indecent chanting," it said.

"Whilst we have not received an official complaint from Wrexham AFC, the police or football authorities, we are taking this matter extremely seriously, with individuals identified as being responsible likely to receive an indefinite ban..."

Wrexham officials told 91Èȱ¬ Shropshire they have no knowledge of any such singing during the game and North Wales Police said they were not aware.

But some Wrexham fans on the website called those involved "idiots", alleging a minority of supporters were involved.

Speed, 42, earned the first of his 85 Welsh caps in a friendly win over Costa Rica in 1990.
