A division of Aberdeen-based Wood Group has won a $24m (拢14.9m) contract to build a gas turbine unit in Texas.

Wood Group GTS will design and construct a 75MW peaking facility - which responds to changes in power demand - for NRG Energy subsidiary Petra Nova.

Wood Group GTS will be responsible for inspection and maintenance of the gas turbine as part of the overall project.

The facility will be located at the W A Parish Generating Station near Houston.

Construction work is to start immediately, with the unit expected to be completed by the summer of 2013.

It will provide additional peak generating capacity to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) market, which serves 23 million Texas customers.

Jim McGlothlin, president of power solutions at Wood Group GTS, said: "We are pleased to be working with NRG on this exciting project, which leverages the combined strengths of our engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) and maintenance support services, and our management of fast-track projects."

Wood Group GTS provides rotating equipment services for clients in the power, oil and gas and clean energy markets.

It is one of three divisions run by international energy services company Wood Group, which employs more than 41,000 people in 50 countries around the world.
