拢200m Aberdeen to Inverness rail move among plans

  • Published

A 拢200m scheme to improve rail services between Aberdeen and Inverness has been announced as part of Scottish improvements.

The plans unveiled by rail chiefs also include electrification schemes for the Whifflet, Shotts, East Kilbride, Barrhead and City Union lines.

It stops short of calling for the east coast main line between Edinburgh and Aberdeen to be electrified.

There is also a 拢37m project to upgrade the line between Inverness and Perth.

The UK-wide 拢5.6bn industry programme covers the period 2014 to 2019.

Better services, improved passenger information, and cuts in the cost of running the railways were outlined as the main aims.

David Simpson, Network Rail route managing director for Scotland, said: "The railways are booming with more and more people choosing rail."
