School closures would be almost inevitable if both of Moray's RAF bases were to shut down, it has been warned.

Nearly 10% of children at Moray Council schools are from RAF families.

It is feared many would leave the region if the UK government decides to close both RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Kinloss.

Calum MacPherson, of Highlands and Islands Enterprise, said every effort was being made to save the two Moray bases.

However, he stressed it was important people were fully aware of how serious an affect closures would have on the area.

Defence Secretary Liam Fox earlier said a decision on the future of the RAF Lossiemouth base would not be taken until the new year.

The Ministry of Defence has insisted no decision has been reached about Lossiemouth.

The campaign to secure the future of Lossiemouth comes amid fears for Moray's other RAF base at Kinloss.

The UK government announced it was cancelling the next generation of Nimrod reconnaissance aircraft, which would have been stationed there.
