Deadline looms for views on Stornoway black pudding

  • Published

A consultation on whether an island delicacy should receive European Union (EU) protection will close later.

The Scottish government has been gathering views on whether Stornoway black pudding should get the same status as Stilton cheese and Parma ham.

Under the EU protected food name scheme, puddings could only be labelled as being Stornoway if they were made on the Western Isles.

The closing date for the submission of views is 1700 GMT.

Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead has previously backed calls for the protection.

Labour MSP Peter Peacock has said the food was threatened by "impostor puddings" made outside of the Western Isles.

He said the authentic food was sought out by the world's top restaurants.
