Summer snowfall in Cairngorms

  • Published

Fresh snow has fallen in the highest parts of the Cairngorms where patches of snow from the winter have survived, according to a mountaineering body.

The Mountaineering Council of Scotland (MCofS) said snow fell over the weekend - among the last days of August.

Small patches of snow from one of Scotland's hardest winters on record have remained in the range.

The MCofS said locations include Choire Mhoir, Coire Cas, Ciste Mhearad and the Garbh Coire.

The council has reported about the snow on its website.

Heavy falls of snow and prolonged spells of freezing temperatures were a feature of the winter just past.

More than 100 skiers took advantage of ski tows opened at the Cairngorm Mountain resort for the first time in midsummer.

Previously at that time of year people were able to ski in the Cairngorms, however, they had to trek to where the snow was.

Two temporary rope tows were provided on two days at midsummer.
