Asda has filed a planning application for a major redevelopment of the former Nortel site in Newtownabbey.

The supermarket chain has been interested in the site since 2012 but the project had been on hold.

The application proposes building a foodstore, business units and housing on the factory site and adjacent land which is zoned for residential use.

The scheme would also involve upgraded access onto the Doagh Road.

The application is made jointly in the names of McLagan Investment and Economic Properties.

McLagan Investment is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Asda which manages the company's property interests.

Economic Properties is a Belfast-registered company, and a mortgage registration suggests it currently owns the site.

Asda has previously said it intended to develop a 40,000 sq ft shop with petrol station and 460 car parking spaces.
