Sunderland murder inquiry launched after assault victim's death

A murder investigation has been launched after a woman died from assault injuries in Sunderland.

Melissa Eastick, 36, was pronounced dead at the scene when emergency services attended an address on Stockton Terrace shortly before 07:15 BST on Tuesday.

Two men, aged 38 and 40, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and released on police bail.

Northumbria Police said it believed the people involved knew each other.

Ms Eastick's family are being supported by specialist officers.

Det Ch Insp Louise Jenkins said inquiries were at an early stage and that officers would remain in the area to provide reassurance.
