Highways England says the work will reduce congestion on a "vital strategic link"

A major construction project to create a triple-decker roundabout on a "vital strategic link" on Tyneside has reached a milestone, Highways England has said.

The £75m programme on the A19/A1058 at Silverlink got under way in August and will last two years.

Once complete, the A19 will have been lowered to an underpass, creating a three-layer road system.

Engineers have now begun the main piling work to support the A1058 so the digging out of the underpass can begin.

Highways England project manager Julie Alexander described it as a "complex piece of engineering".

She said: "This is a great milestone in the project which will see work start on creating the third layer of the roundabout."

The new road system is aimed at reducing congestion on the A19 which is the main route to and from the Tyne Tunnel and used by thousands of motorists every day.
