Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash on Church Street

A 10-year-old boy has suffered a fractured cheekbone in a suspected hit-and-run in Barnsley, police said.

A grey van crashed into the boy on Church Street at about 18:00 BST on Tuesday and officers confirmed the vehicle drove away from the scene.

The boy was taken to hospital and his injures are not believed to be life-threatening.

South Yorkshire Police is appealing for witnesses who saw the crash or may have captured it on their dashcam.

A spokesperson said: "At 5.55pm we were alerted by the ambulance service to a road traffic collision on Church Street.

"The van driver drove away from the scene following the collision. Inquiries are ongoing to identify the van and trace the driver."
