WMAS said moving to the care centre would be "more cost effective"

Planning permission has been granted for a new ambulance station in a Shropshire town.

West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) wants to move its Newport base from the town's fire station to a permanent site at the Newport Cottage Care Centre.

Proposals for the community station involve a portable cabin in the grounds of the care centre with parking for emergency vehicles.

A WMAS spokesman said they hoped to have it ready in August.

Robert Marsh, assistant area manager for WMAS in Shropshire, said: "Now we can begin to turn this into reality.

"I am looking forward to a long and successful relationship with the Cottage Care Centre."

John Airth, trust chairman at the Cottage Care Centre, said: "We have had an onsite meeting to further discuss the location and siting of the base for ambulance personnel."
