Essex and Pakistan cricket player Danish Kaneria has been cleared by police in an investigation into cricket match irregularities.

An Essex Police spokesman confirmed a 29-year-old Chelmsford man had been released from bail in connection with the inquiry.

Another man remained on police bail until 15 September, police said.

Essex bowler Mervyn Westfield, 22, was arrested along with Mr Kaneria, 29, in May when police began their probe.

The allegations relate to spot-fixing, a practice in which money is placed on individual details of a match.

It is believed the match in question was a Pro40 win against Durham in September 2009.

An Essex police spokesman said: "A 29-year-old man from Chelmsford has been released from his police bail in connection with an Essex Police investigation into cricket match irregularities.

"A 22-year-old man also from Chelmsford remains on bail until 15 September."

Essex County Cricket Club had confirmed in May the arrested men were Pakistan leg-spinner Mr Kaneria, 29, and 22-year-old pace bowler Mr Westfield.
