A major route into Bradford city centre will receive a £35m upgrade in a year-long project beginning in 2026.

More than 2.5 miles (4km) of bus lanes and three miles (5km) of cycle lanes will be created on King's Road.

The work, funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, will also see 10 new pedestrian crossings, improvements to 21 bus stops and new green spaces.

A report to the authority said work was likely to begin in February 2026 and be completed by March 2027.

Speed limits will be reduced on some stretches of the road, which runs from Wrose to Canal Road in the city centre.

The work will also see the creation of a CYCLOPS junction - a Dutch-style signalised cycling junction, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The report on the scheme said the existing road was often heavily congested, which affected bus services.

The scheme was included in the West Yorkshire City Regional Sustainable Transport Settlement - an £830m fund awarded to the region by the government in 2022 to boost public transport and active travel.

The report said: "The scheme will better connect low-income residential areas in north-east Bradford, who typically have low car ownership, with the economic opportunities and investment that is occurring in Bradford city centre and surrounding areas.

"This will enhance access to employment, education, training, retail and housing sites by bus, walking and bike."
