Footballer Nile Ranger has denied rape at a hearing at Newcastle Crown Court.
The former Newcastle United striker, who plays for Swindon Town, was charged with rape in connection with an alleged incident at a hotel in the northern city's Jesmond area in January.
The 22-year-old, of Gordon Gardens, Swindon, left the Magpies by mutual consent in March.
He was granted bail ahead of a trial at the court, which is due to take place in January.
Mr Ranger made more than 50 appearances for Newcastle following his debut in 2009, with the majority coming as a substitute.
The former England under-19 international signed for the Wiltshire club in August.
