Swedish DJ and producer Avicii has shot to the top of the singles chart today with the fastest-selling single of the year, Wake Me Up.

It sold nearly 267,000 copies in its first week on sale, beating the previous record by Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines in May by about 76,000.

It is also the biggest single-week sale since The Justice Collective's He Ain't Heavy topped 2012's Christmas chart with sales of more than 269,000.

Avicii is also known as Tim Bergling.

He first topped the UK charts in February with I Could Be The One with Dutch DJ Nicky Romero.

The 23-year-old DJ had two other top five hits in 2011 - Collide with Leona Lewis and Levels, which was later sampled by Flo Rida for his 2012 number one hit Good Feeling.

Wake Me Up pushed Blurred Lines featuring TI and Pharrell Williams down to two, while John Newman's Love Me Again is at three, Icona Pop's I Love It featuring Charli XCX is at four, and Will.I.Am's Bang Bang is at five.

But Thicke managed to end Jay-Z's single week at the top of the album chart, with Blurred Lines bumping Magna Carta Holy Grail down to two.

It is Thicke's second UK top 40 album and its title track broke through the million copies sales barrier earlier this week.

Blurred Lines is the 137th single to achieve this.

Pet Shop Boys were third in the album chart with their 12th studio album Electric, while Rod Stewart's Time is at number four and Passenger's All The Little Lights is at number five.
