A woman has died after a fire at a block of flats in Hove, police have said.

Emergency teams were called to the blaze in Kingston Close just after 05:00 BST on Tuesday.

The 42-year-old woman was taken from the building by fire crews before being treated at the scene by paramedics. But she was pronounced dead a short time later, Sussex Police said.

Officers said the woman's next-of-kin have been informed.

Appealing for witnesses, a police spokesman said: "An investigation is under way with the fire service to fully understand the circumstances behind this tragic incident."

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said six fire engines attended and the Red Cross was also on scene to provide support.
