The club's proposals include constructing two padel courts and extending the clubhouse

Work to improve a golf club in Staffordshire has been approved.

Proposals for the Mount Golf and Country Club, in Perton near Wolverhampton, include extending the clubhouse, a new driving range and two courts for padel tennis.

The club was "looking to invest significantly" to ensure it can continue to compete with its local competition, the application said.

South Staffordshire councillor Robert Reade said it was very important to provide the facility, after the loss of some golf clubs in the area.

The proposed driving range would be single-storey like the existing facility, and would be re-located closer to the clubhouse.

Some of the proposals were considered to be an "inappropriate development in the green belt", however the planning committee approved the plans.

"It will be very prestigious, not only for the village but the area, to have top of the range, cutting-edge facilities," councillor Rita Heseltine added.

This news was gathered by the Local Democracy Reporting Service which covers councils and other public service organisations.
