A driver who led police on a 100mph car chase through York before crashing their vehicle into metal railings has been arrested.

Officers were called to the Acomb area of the city at about 23:10 BST on Monday after receiving reports of a car being driven "suspiciously".

North Yorkshire Police said as a patrol car approached the area a Vauxhall Insignia drove towards them at speed along Holgate Road and on towards the city.

The driver then sped off, reaching speeds of 100mph and driving on the wrong side of the road, before crashing on the approach to the roundabout at Askham Bar.
