A 69-year-old man has denied murdering an 86-year-old retired postmistress more than a decade ago.

David Newton entered a not guilty plea when he appeared at Cambridge Crown Court on Thursday after being charged with the murder of widow Una Crown.

Mrs Crown was found lying in a pool of blood, with her clothing burned, in the hallway of her home in Magazine Lane, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, on 13 January 2013.

Judge Mark Bishop remanded Mr Newton, of Magazine Close, Wisbech, in custody.

A trial has been listed for 13 January

Mrs Crown's death was initially treated as an accident - a murder investigation was launched days later.

Mr Newton was arrested and charged earlier this year.

Police said that a post-mortem examination showed that she died from stab wounds to her neck and chest.

Judge Bishop said a High Court judge would oversee any trial at Cambridge Crown Court.
