A man charged with the racially aggravated harassment of former England rugby union star Ugo Monye is set to face trial.

Angus Beukes, 32, who gave an address in Cape Town, South Africa, appeared at Exeter Magistrates' Court via a video link to deny a charge of causing racially aggravated harassment, alarm or distress.

The charge relates to an alleged incident at Sandy Park after the Exeter Chiefs' 25-24 victory over Gloucester in November 2023.

A trial date has been set for 7 March 2025.

The defendant is accused of using threatening or abusive words or behaviour or disorderly behaviour within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress, and the offence was racially aggravated.

District Judge Stuart Smith adjourned the hearing until the trial date.

Former Harlequins and England rugby player Mr Monye, 41, now works as a TV pundit.
