A firm that has handled bin collections in part of Leicestershire for the past 15 years has had its contract renewed for a further seven years.

Serco has been Charnwood Borough Council's refuse and recycling partner since 2009.

The authority said it had awarded a new contract to the firm following a "significant procurement exercise".

It means Serco will continue to be responsible for collecting waste from 79,000 homes and businesses in the borough.

Council leader Jewel Miah said he was "pleased" the partnership would be continuing.

As part of the deal, Serco is expected to run apprenticeships, help communities deliver environmental projects and take steps to reduce its carbon emissions.
