A woman held over an attempted murder in connection with a suspected poisoning in Newcastle has been released without charge.

Doctor Thomas Kwan, 52, was charged with attempted murder after "unknown substances" were found in a property in Ingleby Barwick, near Stockton-on-Tees, on 6 February.

Northumbria Police said the woman, aged in her 40s, had been told she would face no further action.

The alleged victim, a man in his 70s who is not one of Mr Kwan's patients, had been discharged from hospital, police said.

The court previously heard Mr Kwan, of Brading Court, worked as a GP in Sunderland.

He was also charged with the production and use of a chemical weapon, between 1 and 22 January.

Mr Kwan has not entered a plea and a provisional trial date has been set for 29 July.

He has been remanded in custody.
