School street closures approved to improve safety

Several streets in Sheffield will be closed to traffic during drop-off and pick-up times to make the areas safer for school children.
Roads around Broomhill Infants, Mundella Primary, Pye Bank Primary, Pipworth Community Primary and Hunters Bar Infants will be temporarily blocked.
The city council’s school streets budget will be increased from £203,700 to £530,000 so it can fund the plans, a meeting heard.
Other measures approved include spending £57,000 of government funding on feasibility studies to see what pedestrian improvements could be made on Handsworth Grange Road, Crookes Valley Road and Abbeydale Road.
Traffic filters which limit vehicle access through a road will also be introduced on a number of streets, according to Local Democracy Reporting Service.
These include Mona Avenue near Westways Primary School as well as Newent Lane, Hands Road and Greenhow Street in Crookes.
In addition, a temporary crossing at the junction of Crookesmoor Road and Conduit Road will be made permanent and become a zebra crossing.
A scheme on Penistone Road to encourage walking and cycling will also be given £390,000 to improve the cycle lane and pavements from Rutland Road through to Claywheels Lane.
The council will also consider extending the cycle lane and improving walking from Claywheels Lane to Yewlands Academy, as well as the creation of cycle links from Walkley, Hillsborough, Southey and Parson Cross.
