A former Debenhams store will be refitted to make way for an entertainment and retail hub after plans were approved by councillors.

Bars, street food outlets and performance stages will open at the new Stack development in Wigan鈥檚 Grand Arcade.

The Debenhams store closed in 2021, with pop-up charity shop Rebuild With Hope using the building in the interim.

Neill Winch, chief executive of Stack, said he was 鈥渃onfident that it will become a beloved destination embraced by the local community鈥.

'Underutilised spaces'

The company launched its first branch in Newcastle in 2018 and has opened other branches in Sunderland and Lincoln.

Mr Winch said: 鈥淭his is a strategic direction for STACK as we continue to breathe new life into underutilised spaces, turning them into destinations that benefit both local communities and businesses.鈥

Stack representatives said the new Wigan site, which will take up part of the former Debenhams store, could accommodate up to 2,000 people across two floors and will lead to about 140 jobs.
