A 16-year-old boy has been treated in hospital after being chased into a shop and attacked with what is believed to be a machete after two men tried to steal his bike, police said.

Officers were called to a Tesco Express store in Liverpool at about 18:30BST on Sunday, following reports of an attempted bike robbery.

The teenager was reportedly chased into the shop on Allerton Road, Mossley Hill, by two men, who then attacked him with a bladed weapon.

He suffered minor injuries, to his arm and head, in what Det Sgt Clare Walsh described as a "shocking incident, in a shop which would have been busy with customers".

'Shocking incident'

Nobody else was injured during the episode.

鈥淲e believe the victim was in Calderstones Park and was chased by two males, possibly on a Surron bike," said Det Sgt Walsh.

"The males then made off towards Garston Park.

鈥淭his type of behaviour is totally unacceptable, and we will do everything within our powers to find those responsible and bring them to justice."

The males are described as white, aged between 18 and 20. One was wearing a grey tracksuit, the other was wearing black clothing.

Det Sgt Walsh called on anyone who was in the vicinity of the Tesco Express store on Allerton Road at the time, and saw or heard anything suspicious, to contact the police.
