Specialist investigators are looking into complaints of a "burning smell" in a town.

Residents in Great Harwood, Lancashire, are being asked by Hyndburn Council to keep doors and windows closed because of smoke and odours.

The town has been plagued with similar reports of burning in recent years.

The Environment Agency said it was investigating alongside the the Joint Unit for Waste Crime and the local authority.

'Pollution concern'

The EA said it had "received reports of burning in Great Harwood" and it would be unable to comment further in order not to prejudice inquiries".

A Hyndburn Council spokesman said: 鈥淚f you can smell or see smoke in the proximity, please keep your windows and doors closed.

鈥淚f smoke/a fire is causing a pollution concern, but there is not a threat to life or property, please report this directly to us at Hyndburn Borough Council via our online form."

He urged people to attach images and videos where possible.

鈥淲e will continue to work in partnership with Lancashire Fire and Rescue, The Environment Agency and Lancashire Constabulary to address concerns about the impact of burning,鈥 he added.
