A man has been arrested after a car crashed into railings in Sheffield city centre, leaving one of the passengers in the vehicle with life-threatening injuries.

The crash, which involved a black VW Golf, happened on the A61 St Mary's Gate at about 02:00 BST on Monday, South Yorkshire Police said.

An 18-year-old man who was in the vehicle was in a critical condition in hospital police said, while a 15-year-old boy who was also in the car suffered a head injury, though the force said it was "not expected to be life-altering".

A 21-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, officers said.

The A61 was earlier closed westbound between Shoreham Street and Bramall Lane while investigations were carried out, but has since re-opened

Anybody who saw what happened, or who had information useful to the investigation, was asked to get in touch with South Yorkshire Police.
