A 17-year-old boy has appeared in court following an incident involving a "sharp object" which saw a school put into lockdown.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of carrying out an attack at Birley Academy in Sheffield on 1 May in which two women and a child were injured.

On Friday, he appeared at Sheffield Crown Court via video-link from HMP Wetherby, charged with three counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of a blade or sharply pointed article.

He did not enter any pleas during the hearing and was remanded in custody ahead of his next court appearance on 12 July.

South Yorkshire Police previously said two women in their 20s and a child suffered minor injuries in the incident.

All three were checked over by paramedics at the scene and did not require hospital treatment, the force said.
