New floodlights could be installed at a sports and community centre as part of plans to reopen the facility.

Sheffield United's Derek Dooley Community Centre, in Weston View, Crookes, has been shut since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Plans for 12 floodlights at the site will be decided by councillors on 12 November, with the reopening of the centre said to be dependent on whether it can be used in the evenings.

Sheffield City Council has received 15 letters in objection to the scheme and four letters of support.

The 26ft-tall (8m) LED lighting columns could operate until 23:00 GMT, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

But a council report said the club would be willing to limit their use to 21:15 on weekdays and 19:15 on weekends.

People who objected to the proposals raised concerns about light pollution, an increase in noise and traffic, increased air pollution and an impact on the wildlife.

Those who supported the plans said the lights would increase security at the site and bring the pitches back into use.
